THAT is not easy to do when you are writing a story about kids dying from cancer. The author manages to mix just the right amount of wit and sadness in EVERY situation. The three friends really love and care for each other. There is something refreshingly honest about Hazel and Gus’ relationship. Hazel and Gus’ parents are married, love each other and love their children. The two hit it off and begin a love affair that can only end tragically. On her first night, she meets Augustus Waters (or Gus) a 15 month survivor of osteosarcoma. That is, until her mother forces her to attend a support group for cancer patients. Diagnosed with Stage IV Thyroid Cancer with mets she lives out her days watching reality TV and sleeping. “Pain deserves to be felt.” Does it? Hazel thinks she has nothing left to do in life but die.
